We left Wikieup, AZ at 7:30 am this morning. We wanted to beat the winter storm that was coming through Nevada and into Arizona along our travel route. We drove in rain most of the 250 miles to our present location in Mesquite, Nevada. A few snow flakes as we drove through Kingman, AZ . The worst part was the wind, especially around Hoover Dam. You needed to hang on to the steering wheel as you went across the many bridges in that area.

They just had on the evening news, "HWY 93 heading into Kingman, AZ is shut down do to snow and that all roads heading into the Hoover Dam area are closed do to snow and high winds. We did luck out by getting here earlier today.

Our time in Wikieup, AZ was spent exploring the back country. If you get off the highway you are on dirt roads, some better or worse than others. It was easy to put 50 miles on back country roads and from time to time you would see some housing out in the middle of NOWHERE. Also a lot of property for sale in the mountain valleys. 



 On Sunday, after a little bit of rain and snow in the mountains we decided to take one trail through the mountains. Bad mistake since many parts of the trail were muddy and slick. We ended up driving 17 miles up and down the muddy roads only to come to a point that I did not think I could pass. It was deep mud and water. Diane though I should try but I thought better and turned around and drove 17 miles back out. The entire trip took about 3.5 hours. As you can see from the photo, the Jeep got a bit muddy.


First stop in Mesquite was a car wash to get the rest of the mud off the Jeep.
                                       

On Monday Diane and I drove to Wickenburg about 70 east of Wikieup to have brunch with my first cousin Jan Lord. Jan is also Diane's second cousin (once removed). We ate at the Spur Cafe spending 2 hours swapping stories. It was great spending the time with Jan and getting to know what she has been up to all these years.

 December 20, 2024 We have been in Study Butte for a week now and have enjoyed every minute. The weather has held at 75 degrees daily with lows at night about 45. We do have to turn the heat on early morning and air conditioning in the late afternoon but we can handle that. We spent a day in Big Bend National Park on Tuesday. It was a 25 mile dirt and rock road within the park that took us 4 hours to complete. We did meet two motorcycles and two trucks on the route coming from the opposite direction.  We ended up backing up for about 1/4 mile and hugging the side of a hill to let the two trucks pass.  It was a 35 mile drive to the trail and 50 miles after the trail to get back to our campsite. Yesterday we drove back to Alpine, TX to pick up a prescription for Diane, get the Jeep washed and pick up some groceries. This is a 80 mile trip one-way.  February 6, 2025 We arrived at our campsite near Lake Powell on Saturday. Brand new campground connected to the marina.  Diane said it looked like a golf course with all the green artificial turf. Facing the mountains with beautiful views all around. Boat storage below campground. Flat bottom boats up to 100 feet long and 24 foot wide.   On Tuesday we took a short drive into Page, AZ and on to the Carl Hayden Visitor center by Glen Canyon Dam & Bridge. Similar to the Hoover Dam it is massive. You cannot walk across the dam like at Hoover but you can walk on the bridge to get great shots and view of the dam.  This guy is either cutting grass or scraping up the algae on the surface above the generators at the bottom of the dam.  Glen Canyon dam If you are standing on the bridge when a semi goes by everything shakes.  December 29, 2024 Last post of 2024.  This past week we headed west on 170 past Lajitas to explore what was a native sleeping area in the Big Bend State Park (not to be confused with the Big Bend National Park) about 40 miles from Study Butte. Each hole is a sleeping area in the rock.  Robin, the RV Park owners mother, was our tour guide. She had visited the area, spending quite a bit of time with her daughter exploring the area and was a wealth of information. In walking around the area and climbing up the rocks you could see the areas where the natives carved out the rock for sleeping quarters.   There were 50-100 of these areas carved into the rock from ground level up the hill side. There was still an adobe structure on site as you can see from the pictures. When we left the area, a dirt road leading back toward the mountains called to me so I had to explore.
