A little excitement this week, It rained on Tuesday and all day Wednesday with snow coming down in the mountains. Because of that the Virgin river was overflowing and rising to flood stage. The river behind the campground was about 75 feet from the campground.
About 6 PM on Wednesday the manager from the campground knocked on our door and handed me a sheet of paper; it stated that flood level was 18.9 feet and we were at 14.6 feet. The river circles the back side of the campground and there is a berm about 4 feet high around the campground.
At 7 pm the water, if not for the berm, would have been in the parking lot of the campground. We were told that we needed to prepare to leave the campground should the water continue to rise. We hooked up the Jeep, disconnected everything but electric and raised the jacks. We were ready. About a half dozen RV's left the campground.
I went to the river at 10 pm and the water was still at the same level as at 7 pm. I loaded the National Weather app and Weather Channel app on my phone with alerts should the river get to 16 feet, believing that would give us enough time to pull out. I stayed up until 12:30 am on the sofa checking the apps and watching the weather. It stopped raining around midnight which was a good sign.
Down the highway from Virgin is Hurricane and they did have flood warning listed on each app for certain parts of the city.
Anyhow, Thursday morning came, the adventure was over and the water had receded back 75 feet from the shore.
So, after sitting in the RV for a day and half we (I) decided it was time to explore. I found the side road about 2 miles from the camp and thought we would check it out. It went up the side of a mountain to Hurricane Mesa which is just over 5000 feet about sea level. As you can see from the video, it's a narrow, winding road. Someone must have cleared the mud and rocks from the road in the morning as there were signs that it was done after all the rain.
As is the case most of the time with exploring; you can only go so far then you have to turn around and go back the same way. The dirt trail at the top of the mountain was impassable (mud and a lot of water). So back down the mountain we went. I believe Diane's heart and pulse were elevated on this little adventure.
The views were magnificent. |
