Been a couple of weeks since I updated this blog so lets try to recap the last several weeks. Cold as hell for a few days just like the rest of the country. Dropped down to 33 degrees several nights with high in the upper 30's to low 40's. Went through about 25 gallons of propane during the cold spell. Wind was blowing at around 40-50 miles per hour. RV shook throughout the night, not our fault!
We tried to drive the 30 miles on the beach on a better day after the cold spell but only got 11 miles because of high water. Jelly fish lined the beach, seeing several hundred lying dead.
We had gone to the Turtle place on SPI, educational and home to the sea turtle hospital. They had a temporary hospital set up because of the cold coming. When the water temperature drops to 50 degrees the turtles are "cold-stunned", float to the surface and cannot raise their head to breath, so they drown. Rescue personnel on the beaches and in boats try to rescue as many as possible and care for them until it is time to release.
According to the local news several hundred were rescued and later released. We missed the release.
There was actually 7 mud turtles in the pond that we saw.
Diane wanted me to keep stepping to my right :) |
On Christmas we headed to Brownsville to use up free movie passes we got when seeing Avatar The way of Water on December 15th. Awesome 3 hour movie. Special effects were unbelievable in 3 D. This time we saw Babylon, another 2 hour 45 minutes long. All I can say it was different. It followed the moving-making industry from 1926 thru roughly 1936.
Little hard to see but my GPS took me 1 block to the right, then left 1 block then left 1 block back on the hwy I just turned right off of. Makes you wonder where else it has taken me? |
Yesterday we headed to Boca Chica Beach but in order to get there you have to go to Brownsville then catch the only road that takes you back 16 miles. As the crow flies it is about 2 miles but to drive it is close to 40 miles.
Boca Chica is not only a wild life refuge and 15 miles of beach, but home to the Elon Musk rocket launch pad and facility. You can drive right past the complex. Three rockets are standing ready in an area and another a short distance away. Doesn't seem to be a lot of security around that you can see. But there is only one way there and back.
Fisherman on the Mexican side of the water |
Once on the beach we headed south and drove to the end of the US. 50 yards across the water was Mexico and there were a number of Mexican fisherman standing in the water up to their knees fishing with nets. Saw one person haul out a number of fish in his net. I could have walked over to Mexico if I wanted to. And there was no one trying to come into the US from the other side.
We played ball with Buddy for a bit then drove to the other end of the beach which is right across from Isla Park Campground in SPI 1/4 mile across the bay. Then it was the 40 miles back having to go the long way round. Almost forgot; I got to try out my Christmas present from Diane, a radio controlled car.
On the beach there was the remains of an old wooden ship maybe 100 feet in length.Who knows, it could have been from the last Civil War battle fought here. If interested in more info, look up Rio Grand Civil War Trail.
Yesterday I chauffeured Diane around on a scavenger hunt looking for all the sand sculptures on SPI. I dropped her off several times to hunt them down, maybe 20-30 total. Some of them were starting to fall apart. I just went and got the Jeep washed. :)
Today Judy called: her sister Patti had three cases of wine for me so I sent a check to her and look forward to getting my hands on it when we return home in May.
Waiting for Propane guy to show up and fill our tank so that we have everything ready when we pull our of here on New Years day at 7:30 am and head to Del Rio, TX for a couple of days.
